A spiritual guide or teacher is important in one’s life on the Way.  the student cannot lead him/herself,as this would be as dangerous as a blind person leading another blind person.  To argue that the Holy Spirit is one’s guide is not a good argument at all since the Holy Spirit was ever present but it was still necessary for God to send many teachers and guides, as agents of the Spirit, to show the Way.  A select few are so advanced to be accessible to the Holy Spirit’s direct teaching – others must follow the counsel of advanced guides.
