This is a classic illustration of Yesu’s teaching on reincarnation and karma.  See also John 8:58, 17:5.  the principle explained is that one who has come to the knowledge of everlasting life (as in ‘tree of life’) in the previous birth stands the better chance to be perfected in this life, and the trees of paradise will be concepts more readily understood and ready to serve that person.
